A charming little town in Berrien Co Michigan, Coloma offers real estate for sale in every price range.

COLOMA is a friendly, lively little city within Coloma Township. With its neighbor Watervliet, Coloma enjoys a prime location near Paw Paw Lake, a 900-acre all-sport lake that’s been a beloved summertime destination playground since the 1890s.

Along the lakeshore, the unincorporated community of Paw Paw Lake claims almost 4,000 residents, located in parts of both Coloma and Watervliet townships. In the height of the railroad era, ten times that many would travel from Chicago to swim, boat, fish and party on the dance floor at the Crystal Palace Ballroom, built for 2,500.

The Crystal Palace has been gone for decades, but new generations have continued to flock to Paw Paw Lake, Coloma, and Watervliet to make memories at the shore. Population around the lake is about three times higher in the summer than it is in the winter months- although this all-sport lake is located in an all-season region, with a network of great trails for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

“So many great memories,” as one lake-lover notes on the open Facebook page devoted to Paw Paw Lake doings. “If only the lake could talk, what a tale it could tell! lol.” (Another user responds that it’s a good thing lakes can’t talk. LOL, indeed.)

The lake may not speak aloud, but its resident humans listen for its needs nonetheless. When algae blooms, sediment and Eurasian water-milfoil became problematic a few years ago, the community came together and formed Paw Paw Lake Restoration, through which lakefront property owners are all assessed a modest fee that subsidizes restoration and protection of the waters.

The first weekend in August is devoted to the Coloma Glad-Peach Festival, during which the region’s abundant gladiola and peach harvests are celebrated with two stages of live music, classic cars, and fireworks.

Fine dining with a view of the lake is available at the Waterfront in Coloma, complete with a piano player on Friday and Saturday nights. The Easy Street Inn and the Friendly Tavern serve burgers, Mexican and other good pub fare. The Bend is a popular place for a late night drink, and Lake Michigan Breeze offers both family dining and late night DJ parties.. In Watervliet, you’ll find good eating at the Board of Trade steak house and Beaches and Cream Cafe, and the Chinese at Moo’s Place is a local favorite. There’s a Dairy Queen for those moments when nothing will do but a soft-serve cone.
